Heatwaves linked with excess mortality
EHINZ has published a new report comparing two different approaches to identifying heatwaves in New Zealand: the Excess Heat Factor (EHF), and the NZ MetService heat alerts.
This report identifies heatwaves (or heat alert days) using these two approaches, and estimates associated excess mortality during these periods, in Canterbury and Auckland, from 2000 to 2021.
Our study found that heatwaves have had a substantial impact on excess mortality in these two regions over the past 20 years.
